Greyhound-Borzoi Puppies

When a central valley breeder was shut down, he had three litters of greyhound/borzoi cross puppies. GFFL now has two of these litters. Four boys, born at the end of March, will be ready for adoption the week of June 22nd. Another litter, including 2 boys and 2 girls, will be ready for adoption in early July.

Sighthound Mixes in Auburn

On Wednesday, April 29, Shana received an email from a breeder in the Red Bluff area.  She requested our help in placing Irish Wolfhound / Greyhound mix

approximately 35 sighthound mixes, including 23 puppies one year or younger, and 12 adults.

Because of their longer fur, these dogs were used to living outside.  Fortunate for us, because our indoor kennel is full of greyhounds!  The sighthound mixes are being housed in the outdoor pens and, thanks to Big Dog Rescue in Penngrove, CA for the loan of some additional outdoor pens, we now have plenty of protected kennels for them.

Needless to say, our human and financial resources are spread quite thin.  Caring for 18 foster greyhounds was already a handful, but picking up poop and preparing food for an additional 35 dogs is staggering!  The dogs are safe and comfortable, but any volunteers that can come to Auburn to help during turnouts will be greatly appreciated!

We will be carefully adopting these sighthound mixes into appropriate homes and transferring others to rescue groups who are prepared to do some socialization and leash work with these dogs.  We want to ensure that these dogs have a 'Happily Ever After', even if it takes some time.

For further information about these dogs, please contact Shana at foothillfosters@yahoo.com or Barbara at bajudson@gmail.com or 510-525-3844.

In November, 2008, the racetrack in Tamuning, Guam closed (with as many as 300 dogs), and as many as 100 unaltered greyhounds were handed out to the general public—to anyone who asked for one, without regard for what the people intended to do with them. More than 60 of the dogs that were given away have been rescued by the tireless efforts of volunteers at Guam Animals in Need (GAIN). Many of the dogs have been abandoned and found close to death; several of these did not survive. Others have been found in terrible condition due to abuse, dehydration, and starvation. The dog rescued in the photo below was found chained outside a home with no food and some dirty water; he was in reasonably good shape compared to some of the dogs that have been rescued.

In addition to the dogs that were given away, many more are being held at the track until they can be brought to the states.

Louise Coleman of Greyhound Friends in Massachusetts and Joan Eidinger of Greyhound Network News spearheaded the effort to bring media attention to the crisis and sent a well-known photojournalist to document the situation in Guam.  The Greyhound Protection League stepped forward and offered to pay for the vetting and transportation costs to move the Guam greyhounds to the states for adoption through local adoption groups.  Homestretch Greyhound Rescue and Adoption in Fillmore (LA area) took on the huge task of meeting the dogs at the LA airport and caring for them until they can be moved on to other adoption groups.

The valiant, often dispiriting efforts of the GAIN volunteers in Guam and the tireless efforts of the Homestretch volunteers in LA have made possible all the headway accomplished thus far.  However, greyhounds must move out of Homestretch into other adoption groups so that Homestetch's capacity to house and care for them is not exceeded.

Greyhound Friends for Life brought up the first 5 Guam dogs on January 24th and will be bringing more of these dogs up to Auburn as our current dogs are adopted and space becomes available.   We will also be moving dogs that have been vetted and temperament tested into foster homes to make room for more of the Guam dogs.   We can always use more foster homes – especially homes without cats or small dogs.  Please let us know if you can foster – call Barbara at (510) 525-3844 or (510) 506-6225 or email at bajudson@gmail.com.

We are also looking for drivers who would be willing and able to help transport dogs from LA up to northern California (or beyond)!
