You’re Invited to Participate in a 5K Walk & Sunset BBQ

../images/egypt004.jpgThe greyhound breed originated in Ancient Egypt as a companion dog and hunting partner. Today, many racing greyhounds face the threat of euthanasia at the end of their ‘career’ and spend most of their lives in kennels. This scenario can be found around the world. Recently, GFFL has been instrumental in saving the lives of many former racing dogs from Guam. Fortunately, annually over 10,000 former racers find the way back to their roots as a ‘best friend’ in a home environment via Greyhound Friends for Life (GFFL) and other rescue organizations.

In addition, many large breed dogs are homeless due to financial situations and related circumstances. This spring, economic stress prompted a breeder to ask for help in finding homes for over 35 sighthound mixes. GFFL stepped up to the task. At the moment, the Auburn Foster Home is at triple design capacity. A fellow rescue organization, Big Dog Rescue, generously lent GFFL outdoor kennels to house the dogs safely, but human and monetary resources are being spread extremely thin.

In recognition of the greyhound’s heritage, the Auburn Foster Home fundraising event this year is a 5K Walk and Sunset BBQ: WALK LIKE AN EGYPTIAN will be held on June 20 from 5pm to 9pm. The 5K walk (optional) will be held at the Laursen Ranch in Auburn where the foster home is located. All socially adept two-legged and four-legged friends are welcome! BBQ tables will be elevated to keep the doggies from snacking. There will be a silent auction and entertainment along with Ancient Egyptian costume contests for both humans and canines. Tickets to the event are $50 per person. The annual Auburn Foster Home fund raising events have historically hosted over 100 people each year and are always a lot of fun.

On Sunday, June 21, the Auburn Foster Home will hold its annual Anniversary Picnic. This is a very casual gathering of people and dogs enjoying a potluck salad lunch and sharing greyt stories.
